Rockdale ISD athletic teams continue to proceed with their respective seasons with caution, as the University Interscholastic League pushed back the season for all 5A and 6A schools.
All 5 and 6A Texas schools season will now start on Sept. 24. Practices scheduled for Aug. 3 are now pushed back to Sept. 7, the UIL announced on Tuesday.
“With us being a 3A school, I’m thrilled with the ruling,” RHS Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Jacob Campsey said. “I’m glad the kids will be able to start the season on time. It’s going to be a long process though.
“Due to COVID, we won’t be able to do things like we did in the past,” he said. “We’ll have to go through a whole new list of protocols to make sure we’re doing things safely.”
Thorn-dale and Milano are 2A schools and they will not be affected by the ruling for the time being.
“Our goal for releasing this plan is to provide a path forward for Texas students and schools,” UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt said.
“While understanding situations change and there will likely be interruptions that will require flexibility and patience, we are hopeful this plan allows students to participate in the education-based activities they love in a way that prioritizes safety and mitigates risk of COVID-19 spread.”
Due to the uncertainty of the NFL playoff schedule, and if the Dallas Cowboys will be hosting a playoff game, State Championships will be played sometime in January.
Since all schools will not be opening at the same time, the plan allows for schools to make playing decisions at the local level.
The UIL will continue to work with state officials and monitor CDC and federal guidance to determine any potential modifications that may become necessary. They will also work with schools that have scheduling issues not addressed in the new plan to allow them flexibility to play in as many games as possible.
Fall sports in Class lA to 4A schools, which include football, volleyball, cross country and team tennis will continue as scheduled.
