Seconds after a 12-yard kickoff return by Dawson junior Jakoby Moore, lightning bolts within sight forced officials to cancel the contest between the Thorndale and Dawson.
The Bulldogs concluded pre-season play undefeated, with a 2-0 record.
“It sure would have been nice to get another game under our belts before district play,” said Thorndale High School Head Football Coach Scott Hawkins. “Especially since we got dropped by our week one opponent. We were one game behind everyone else, but you can’t control the weather. All we can control is our attitude and effort.”
Another upside to not playing was that the
Bulldogs were able to stay healthy, and it gave players more time to recover in time for district, Hawkins said.
The Bulldogs start District 13-2A DI play on the road against the Rosebud-Lott Cougars.
In Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine, the Cougars are picked to finish last in district, but are coming off a playoff season in 2017, and only lost seven of their 22 starters from last year’s crew. They even have senior running back Demetrio Castillo returning to the team after getting injured last season.
“Rosebud-Lott is big up front and they have a huge running back (Demetrio Castillo),” Hawkins said. “Coach (Lance) Betak and his defense will have their work cut out for them.”
Last year the Bulldogs defeated the Cougars 22-21. The Bulldogs ended up scoring two touchdowns off passes, something they hadn’t done since 2013, and Luke Leschber ran for 106 yards on 22 carries. Last year’s Rosebud-Lott team out ran the Bulldogs 246-209.
“We need to secure the38 ball 27,” said Hawkins. “And W run -18 the clock when we L 47 have -28 it.”
