Individually and as a team, RHS powerlifters dominated in their weight classes and broke multiple schools records during the 2019 Texas High State Powerlifting Association season and ended their regular season on a high note at the Florence Invitational last Friday.
“I thought we did pretty good that day,” said Jacob Campsey, RHS head powerlifting coach. “Our girls did great and we had some really good individual performances.”
The Lady Tigers finished second out of eight teams with a first place finish by Jesenia Navarro in the 105-pound weight class and second place finishes from Tasha San Migel in 97, Mackenzie Musto in 132 and Whitley Boyd in the 165.
Haven Jimenez placed sixth in the 181 and Lisbett Boussart was disqualified during the deadlift in 181 class.
For the Tigers, Nathan Jeter and Avery Boundy placed second in the 114- and 123-pound weight classes. Robert Barrera placed fourth in the 275 and Gavin Aguilar finished seventh in the 242. Chris Reyes and Alex Ellison placed seventh and 10th in the 220. Nathan Thomas placed 11th in the 165. Jeovanny Navarro was disqualified during the dead lift.
RHS powerlifters have an opportunity to qualify for the regional meets, which take the top 12 lifters in each weight class, according to Campsey.
“At this point, we have seven lifters that have theoretically qualified,” he said. “Things could change at the last chance qualifiers coming up this week, but we have three who are in the top-end of their class and will likely qualify no matter what happens.”
As of press time. Navarro is the fifth-ranked lifter in the 105-pound weight class and Musto is third in the
132. For the boys, Jeter is ranked sixth in the 114.
Rockdale, which is headed to the Last Chance Qualifier meet at Salado High School on Thursday, is taking five lifters.
Three Lady Tigers are headed to Salado – San Migel, Autumn Montelongo and Boyd.
San Migel is 11th in the 97-pound weight class and Montelongo is also 11th in the 148 with a 30-pound safety net ahead of the 13th place lifter. Boyd is ranked 12th in the 165 class with a five-pound lead over her competition.
Barrera will lift in the super heavyweight class or the 275-pound class depending on his weigh in.
Navarro, a 2018 regional qualifier, needs to add 30 pounds to his 815 lift total in order to qualify for the Region II Division 3 meet for the second year in a row.
The Region II Division 3 meets will take place on Saturday, March 2, at Little River-Academy High School for the girls and on Saturday, March 9, in West for the boys.
