Ross Loth ended the Region III Class 3A Golf Tournament held at the Brenham Country Club on Monday and Tuesday as a state qualifier after finishing as the third place medalist with a score of 84-81-165.
He improved his score of 84-83-167, which he shot on March 22 and 23 at the same course.
“Ross has had a really good season,” said Ethan Noel, Rockdale High School golf coach. “I know at the state tournament that Troup has a couple of good golfers and Merkel will have some but if Ross plays well, he can make it in the top fifteen. He’s got the skill set.”
Loth will compete at the UIL Class 3A state golf tournament at the Grey Rock Golf Course in Austin on May 20-21.
The Tiger golf team finished the regional tournament in fourth place with a score of 351-357-708 behind Pollok Central, Cameron and Orangefield.
The Tigers finished the first day tied for second with Orangefield at 351, 24 strokes behind eventual champion Pollok Central and four strokes ahead of Cameron.
On the second day, the Tigers fell six strokes behind Orangefield. The Yoemen upped their game by shooting 20 strokes better than their first day in Brenham. “We knew coming into regionals that Central was the team to beat,” Noel said. “And they played like it. We beat them in Brenham earlier this season, but they didn’t have their best golfer Cameron Hubbard and felt like that would likely make a difference.”
Hubbard shot the highest score at regionals with a total of 82-73-155.
Noel also said the weather was ideal and wasn’t a factor.
“Besides a little drizzle and a slight wind on Tuesday it was perfect,” Noel said. “Maybe we didn’t have the best day and our maybe our swings weren’t as good as they needed to be, but this group did really well this year. I’m proud of their effort throughout the entire season.”
The rest of the Tiger team shot: 85-86171, Brady Nelson, senior; 87-94-181, Brayden Burns, sophomore; 95-98-193, Doss Hasselbach, senior and 104-96-200 Jake Hasselbach, freshman.
This was the final high school golf tournament for seniors Doss Hasselbach and Brady Nelson. Nelson is a four-year varsity player, who has been to the state tournament three times.
LADY TIGERS — Whitley Boyd and Gracey Burns will play in the girls regional also at Brenham Country Club on Wednesday and Thursday after qualifying as medalists at the District 19-3A Tournament on Monday, April 8.
“If they can play well on the first day and keep it going into the second, I think they can finish pretty high,” Noel said. “Both Whitley and Gracey did really well in Brenham this season.”
Boyd is scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning and Burns is set for 9:15 a.m.
