Over the course of nearly two months, the Milano Eagle basketball team has gone 3-8.
However, what the winloss column doesn’t say is that facing challenging competition on the court has been an ongoing theme for the boys this season.
They’ve lost to Class 4A Caldwell 60-56 and fell 53-52 to a traditionally strong Somerville in a game they were up 13 before heading into the final quarter. They also beat Dime Box, a Class 1A power, 50-48.
When head coach Lee Essman put together the schedule for this season last spring, he prioritized making it much tougher.
“Yeah, everyone likes to win,” He said. “But to me it’s all about preparing your kids for district, trying to make the playoffs and seeing how far you can go.”
LAST WEEK—Before the beginning of 2021, the Eagles lost 71-51 to Weimar, a top 2A program, on the road Thursday.
Jayce Todd led MHS with 15 while Ethan Gordon had 11. Bryson Richards had eight.
MHS went up against a tough Wildcat team that has only one loss this season.
THIS WEEK—The Eagles wrap up pre-district Friday evening in Iola.
The maroon-and-gold beat the Bulldogs earlier this season 43-33 on Friday, Dec. 4.
Game time is scheduled for 6:15 p.m., following the conclusion of the junior varsity contest.
LADY EAGLES— The girls’ didn’t have any games this past week and the Reporter didn’t receive results from Tuesday night’s game with Granger.
The Lady Eagles face Milam County rival Thorndale on Friday evening.
The Lady Bulldogs are 6-4 on the season, but are an experienced team that only lost three players to graduation and those losses came to Class 3A Troy, Academy and Lexington and Class 4A Salado.
Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
