Rockdale faced tough competition in Bastrop when they played in the Cedar Creek Tournament, which featured 32 teams primarily from classifications 5A and 6A.
“We had some tough struggles,” said Brian Thomas, Lady Tiger assistant volleyball coach. “But we fought hard and showed we can compete at a high level.”
On Thursday, RHS opened up the tourney against Class 6A Round Rock-McNeil. Rockdale took the Lady Mavs to three games in a 8-25, 25-23, 20-25 match. Sophomore Haven Jimenez led the squad with 17 kills and freshman Yoli Castillo was all around the court with 26 assists. Payton Miller led the team with 26 digs, Emily Depines had 14 and Averie Hobbs had 10. The Lady Tigers also lost to Poth 16-25, 24-26. Depine had six kills and Castillo had 19 assists. Miller had six digs.
The Lady Tigers had three games on Friday starting with a 21-25, 15-25 loss to Class 5A Bastrop. Freshman Julie Bartsch led the girls with five kills. Castillo had nine assists and Miller had eight digs. Rockdale then faced District 19-3A rival Lexington in a game that they lost 25-20, 25-27, 13-25. Anna Harmon led with nine kills. Castillo assisted 25 points and Miller had 13 digs. In their final game on Friday, the Lady Tigers lost to Class 4A Aubrey, a school north of Dallas, 12-25, 18-25. Jimenez led Rockdale three kills. Castillo had eight assists and Depine and Miller each had eight digs.
Rockdale finished the Cedar Creek tourney with a 21-25, 8-25 loss to Class 6A San Antonio-Taft. Jimenez had four kills, Castillo had 12 assists and Miller had eight digs.
THRALL – Earlier in the week, Rockdale faced the Thrall Tigerettes, a team that was ranked seventh in the Texas Girls Coaches Association at the time of their match. THS outlasted Rockdale winning the match 20-25, 23-25, 16-25. Jimenez had eight kills, Castillo had 17 assists and Miller had 14 digs.
THIS WEEK – Rockdale played Georgetown Gateway on Tuesday after press time.
The Lady Tigers host their own varsity tournament this weekend with games on Thursday and Saturday. Game times haven’t been announced before press time.
MILANO – The Milano Lady Eagles ended their week with a win defeating Bosqueville 25-15, 30-28, 25-23.
On Tuesday evening, MHS lost to Brazos Christian School in Bryan 17-25, 16-25, 22-25.
The Lady Eagles had Tuesday off but play up the road in Rockdale at the Lady Tiger tournament on Thursday and Saturday. They will also play on Friday in Bremond for a game at 4 p.m.
THORNDALE – The Lady Bulldogs had a challenging week, facing TGCA’s top-ranked team in Class 3A, Troy, and 14th-ranked Lago Vista.
On Friday, they traveled to Lago and swept the Lady Vikings 25-8, 25-21, 25-12. Landri Leschber led THS with 10 kills and Kyndal Robinson had nine assists.
On Tuesday, Thorndale took Troy to four games in a 18-25, 27-29, 25-21, 19-25 match won by the Lady Trojans. Madi Smith-led Thorndale with nine kills, seven blocks and 12 digs. Leschber and Robinson also Thorndale with 13 kills and 14 assists.
“Troy is a good team with a very good middle,” said Angel Raines, THS head volleyball coach. “We didn’t make adjustments until it was too late.
THS played Taylor against the Lady Ducks on Tuesday after the release of this week’s Reporter and travel to Little River-Academy on Thursday and Friday for a tournament.
