CAMERON PD OFFICER, SUSPECT BOTH DEAD IN SHOOTOUT

An early morning shootout left the suspect and a Cameron Police officer both dead.

Milam County Sheriff Mike Clore confirmed a Cameron PD officer is dead after authorities executed a raid early this morning in Cameron.

Police obtained a warrant for a suspect who allegedly had shot a person the day before. Cameron PD had responded about 11PM Wednesday in reference to a gunshot victim in the 700 block of North Travis. The victim was shot in the back of the neck by their spouse.

Authorities then got the warrant and executed the raid this morning in the 500 block of East 7th Street, at which time the suspect opened fire at approaching officers. The suspect was killed in the shootout. The Cameron officer was wounded and rushed to the hospital where he later died.

Milam County deputies, Cameron PD, Rockdale PD, and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers took part in the warrant raid. At this time, there is no danger to the public. DPS Troopers and the Texas Rangers are now on scene investigating.

A procession featuring more than a dozen law enforcement and emergency vehicles from around Central Texas escorted the body of the fallen Cameron officer back into town about 6AM today.

Names of those involved have not been released at this time.
