COVID-19 claims another Milam County life

COVID-19 has claimed a third life in the month of July bringing Milam County's death toll from the disease to 52.

There were no deaths from the disease, which now has a vaccine, in June. The last reported death due to COVID-19 before the three so far this month was in late May.

Currently there are 35 active cases in the county with four in the hospital; none on a venilator. There is a vaccination clinic at the County Health Department in Cameron at 209 S. Houston Ave. from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

"By the way, today (July 22) I learned that Milam County has the second highest vaccination rate in our COG region of seven counties. The only county that was higher was Hamilton County, but it has a much smaller population and only 2,900 individuals have been vaccinated there. In Milam County we have vaccinated almost 8,000 or about 38% of those 12 and over who are eligible to be vaccinated. Our high rate is directly attributable to the extensive, accurate reporting of each of you and the dedication of the Health Department, our volunteers and the county in general to go forward with our vaccination protocol. Some counties, such as Bell County have gotten out of the vaccination business and are relying on the private sector for vaccinations. We are not and we will continue until every person in the county who wants a shot, gets a shot," County Judge Steve Young said in an email.
