The “remote learning” era in the Rockdale ISD began Monday as students became able to receive instruction online.
Schools are closed until at least April 3, but the district is vowing to continue not only education but also the free meals for students which began last week.
The two are connected. Beginning Wednesday the free meals—now three times a week—will also be sites to drop off “learning packets” for students, according to Assistant Supt. Pam Kaufmann.

MEALS—Free meals, which had been handed out in the elementary gym parking lot will be in a new format beginning Wednesday, according to Kaufmann.
“We will now be handing out multiple meals for more than one day at each location,” she said.
Here are the locations:
• Elementary gym parking lot. (Continuing).
• Parking lot at Rockdale High School next to Career Tech Building (football field side of campus).
• Rockdale Housing Authority Main Office, 100 Cordova Drive.
• Aycock Center.
• Corner of San Andres and San Gabriel.
• Corner of Jessie and Sierra, Praesel Addition.
• Old General Store in Sharp.
• Corner of Northwood Drive and Northwood Circle, off US 77.
• Minerva Community Center.
• Salty Community Center.
Kaufmann said meals are available to anyone 18 and younger.
“This is very important,” she said. “The student must be present to receive a meal. Parents may not come alone to pick up meals for the student.”
Kaufmann said meals will now be distributed as follows at all locations:
• Mondays—Student will receive one hot lunch, one cold lunch and two breakfasts.
• Wednesdays—Student will receive one hot lunch, one cold lunch and two breakfasts.
• Fridays—Students will receive one hot lunch, two cold lunches and two breakfasts.
SCHOOL BUSES—At the same time, campus staffers will be on school buses at each location to hand out, or receive, instructional material from students.
“These would be materials that need to be completed, or have been completed,” Kaufmann said.
She emphasized that each student or parent realize that only Rockdale ISD school vehicles are authorized to carry persons interacting with students.
Representatives from all Milam school districts will gather again on April 2.
