Ants are one of the most common pests in residential spaces. They can pose a threat to pets, children and be a nuisance in general. It is important to maintain proper control protocols in order to prevent ant populations from getting out of hand.
The most proven method to fire ant control is the Two-Step. The first step in this process is the application of bait. There are a wide range of baits available that can be quite effective. Baits are slower acting and take between 4 and 6 weeks to achieve control. The benefit is that they can treat a wide area and can work on mounds that you may not have noticed. The best time to apply bait is during the morning or evening when ants are most active. It is also important to utilize bait when rain is not expected for the next 1-2 days.
The final step is ensuring that ants are actively feeding. This can be tested by utilizing a household snack (for example a potato chip) placed near a mound. If it is being fed on within an hour of placement, it is a good time to broadcast bait.
The second step is to utilize individual mound treatments. Using dust, granular, or liquid drenches on problem mounds can control those in a shorter time span. It is important to closely follow the labels on those products to ensure safety, and the most effective control of those ants.
By utilizing both methods , bot h shor t- and long-term control can be achieved. While the battle to control fire ants is constant, proactive management can mitigate problems and allow for the limit of those pesky fire ants.
