After a torrid start to 2018, due to the construction of a new football field, building permits cooled off considerably during June.
Permits totaled $33,475 in June, inching the 2018 half-year total to $5,388,126.
Most of that is, of course, the $5,090,413 permit issued in May for the new football field, now going up on the footprint of the former Tiger Field, which has been razed.
The total already eclipses the $5,186,826 in all 12 months of 2017, a year which included the $3,512,471 permit for the new police station.
NO. 6—2017 had been the sixth-place year, all-time. Now that honor goes to 2018.
The current year has a ways to go to crack the top five, however. Here are those totals: No. 1—2008, $30,877,029 (new intermediate school, expansion-renovation of high school). No. 2—2006, $9,220,773. No. 3—2003, $8,872,018. No. 4—2004, $7,569,950. No. 5—2007, $7,445,183. Permits only reflect construction within the Rockdale city limits. MONTH-BY-MONTH—Here are the month-by-month building permit totals, so far, for 2018. January—$32,514. February—$16,166. March—$136,794. April—$78,764. May—$5,148,672. June—$33,475.
There have been no home starts in Rockdale this year. Only one was recorded in 2017. Building permits in Rockdale area available since the “Alcoa boom” year of 1954.
