This year’s annual Rockdale Chamber of Commerce Banquet was canceled but over the past few years the annual awards were bestowed at the Chamber headquarters as follows:
• Citizens of the Year— Jeff and Rebecca King. “Participate, and financially back, your sports program, active in Tigers Booster Club and Rockdale Country Club. Organized Rockdale’s Little Dribbler program with more than 180 persons involved during the year.”
• Outstanding Citizen—Charles Starr. “Organizer of annual Buddy Oney Toy Run and MARC Run which have raised money for MARC Center and provided toys for children.”
• Business of the Year—Judith Matula of Pud Owens-Judith Matula Realty. “A go-to person for any information about Rockdale. Doer of many behind-the-scenes good deeds and has worked for free more than anyone.”
• Organization of the Year—Rockdale Noon Lions Club. Long established civic organization that supports vision screenings, camps for children with disabilities, junior-high LEO Club, Christmas Roundup, scholarships, YMCA swimming pool and much more.
• Outstanding Service—Dave Melton and Rey Mata—“Involved in many community projects including organizing ans sustaining Earth Day. Have put in various gardens including one at the Rockdale ISD Administration Office.”
• Ambassadors of the Year—Pat and Charlie Watson—Two of Rockdale’s most familiar faces who turn up at almost every event and volunteer for many organization. Said the Chamber, before attempting to list some of the Watsons’ volunteer events: “No one can keep up with all the volunteering they do.”
