High school can be a difficult time for students as they stare at the gateway to the “real world.” There are a lot of choices to be made that will directly affect a student’s future. These choices are difficult when you do not fully know who you are or what you want to do for the rest of your life. The important thing is for students to put themselves in a position to be successful when they graduate. Whether it be attending a four year university, enlisting in the military, gaining skills at a technical school, or directly entering the workforce, we hope that students leave Rockdale High School with the necessary skills and experiences to be successful.
Students need to have a strong academic background no matter where their path takes them. It is important that they are able to communicate with others. One of our campus wide initiatives is improving writing. Students are writing in all of their classes in an effort to improve their writing skills and their ability to communicate with others. Being able to organize thoughts and your purpose will get you started toward success.
We are also offering several classes that allow students to find what they are interested in. As they figure out their interests, we have pathways that allow them to develop their skills and give them a head start when pursuing employment, training or higher education. Some of our pathways include nursing, welding, construction, graphic design and teaching.
We give them opportuni ties to gain certifications as well as the experiences that will help them as they move forward.
In fact, this past week, we had five students gain welding certifications at a competition hosted right here in Rockdale.
At 5 p.m. Feb. 3, we will be hosting a College Awareness Night. Our current plans are for this to be a virtual event through Zoom and will be available to all RHS students.
We have invited four year colleges and universities, two year colleges, technical schools, cosmetology schools and military representatives.
We will also have representatives from A+ Federal Credit Union to discuss the financial aspect of attending post-secondary schools.
Registration for the event will take place in January. The zoom meeting will have several break out rooms and the participants can choose which rooms they want to attend. There will be door prizes for those attending virtually and we will open up the high school cafeteria for those that need access to wi-fi and a device.
While high school can be a difficult time, we will continue to provide opportunities that help students navigate through choices. Educating high school students has changed and we are continually looking for ways that we can better prepare our students. With the opportunities, experiences and the available pathways, we continually work to get the students of Rockdale High School students ready for the “Real World.”
