Howdy! My name is Kolman Hengst, and I am a member of Thorndale 4-H. On March 19, 253 students from across the state participated in “4-H Day at the Capitol.” The event, hosted by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, allowed 4-H members to learn more about our legislative process, see our legislators in session and to visit with our elected o cials.

Congress was in session, which allowed me to watch both houses debate bills. I was most interested in the senate because they were discussing a bill on education. I was surprised that not many senators or representatives were on the . oor as bills were being debated.

My favorite part of the day was talking to sta about agriculture. I met with sta - ers for State Representative Stan Gerdes and State Senator Charles Schwertner. In those meetings I spoke about how 4-H has impacted my life. On a personal note, I also spoke about the challenges facing young agricultural producers in Milam County.

I enjoyed learning how our state governments work and promoting 4-H to our government leaders. “4-H Day at the Capitol” takes place every other spring and is open to all ages of 4-H members. I recommend attending!
