Rockdale High School Principal Tiffany Commerford-Whitsel has some helpful suggestions for any student struggling with the transition to high school:

Being involved in High School allows you to get the most out of your high school experience. Going to games, being involved in clubs and activities, and attending concerts are all great ways to get involved.

Here are some reasons why your student should get involved in high school:

FRIENDS—One of our students at RHS said, “freshmen and sophomore year, I got involved in clubs here and there, but during junior year I finally really got involved in Rotary Interact and NHS. In both of those groups I made relationships I wouldn’t be the same without, all because I tried something different.”

NEW INTERESTS—A student at RHS said, “Personally, I found my place in student council. My freshman year of high school, a friend convinced me to join and I fell in love with being able to make choices on what happens in the school and scheduling events.

“For example, picking out dress up days for Battle of the Bell was so much fun and made me feel like I was a part of something bigger than myself.”

If you join a club that you actively participate in, you will gain a much better high school experience.

Another student shared, “Joining a sport was an awesome experience. I ran cross country and became close with my teammates and my coach.

“Running wasn’t always fun, and I am not an athlete but the memories I made on bus rides, at meets, and going to eat are some of my favorites from last year.”

NOTHING TO DO—On TV, high school is one big party, and everyone always has something to do, somewhere to be, and someone to see.

Let’s be honest; there is a lot of time students are sitting at home watching Netflix and scrolling through their phones.

A better way to spend time is getting involved with various groups on campus, off campus, or volunteering. It will keep them busy, out of trouble, and a chance to have fun too.

LEADERSHIP—If a student enters band, for example, as a freshman, and continues with it all four years, they have numerous opportunities to foster leadership skills.

They may become a section leader, then treasurer, and by the time they are a senior they could be drum major. Not only does all of this look great on college applications, it also helps them grow personally; which is what high school is all about

RESUME—While students should not just get involved to build their resume or do things to put on college applications, it is helpful to show schools and future employers that they are well-rounded and responsible individuals.

Club involvement can also mean scholarships. With good grades and club involvement, scholarship opportunities will be much easier for your student than their less involved peers.

Getting involved in high school can be fun and has many benefits.

Whether your student does it in a big way or in a small way, making an effort makes your high school years more enjoyable.
