Rockdale Girl Scouting has a long and proud history.

Meetings were held in homes in the 1930s. Hostesses from the 30s to the 50s included Gladys Maxwell, Dottie Stewart, Nettie Turner, Florence Marrs, Jerry Weed, Jane Hood, Willyne Lamb and Nita Jones.

Scouts also used the St. Thomas Episcopal Parish Hall, the First Christian Church annex, Fair Park and Rockdale State Bank community room.

By 1955 there were 128 girls in nine troops, ages 9 to 16.

William Cameron & Company lumber yard donated a Murray Avenue lot for use as a Girl Scout House in 1955. Funds raising began, a slab was poured in 1956 and construction began in 1957.

Funds came from community donations and those legendary Girl Scout cookie sales.

The building was dedicated May 4, 1958. Mayor Linwood Mehaffey did the ribbon cutting honors and Dr. W. F. O’Kelley and Tommy Thompson (Girl Scout Board chair) were also on the program.

Scouts are looking for a “new home.” See story page 1A.
