The feature of the primary election as applied to Milam County lies in the fact that every county officer who had an opponent, regardless of the length of time that officer had served, was swept from his office by a decisive majority.

Y.A. Gjedde has been marketing many dozens of fine young “roasting corn” the past week, and this morning left The Reporter man a dozen as a sample of his dry weather June corn. Mr. Gjedde planted an acre of this June corn on May 28, after first having thoroughly prepared the land, which was deep, sandy soil. This corn has never had a drop of rain on it since it came up, and yet it is producing as fine corn as we have ever seen. Mr. Gjedde says he figured the acre will produce not less than 25 bushels. He is selling it now to local merchants at a price that means better than $2.50 per bushel. Some farmer, that man Gjedde.

Wednesday afternoon Mrs. Tom Paul was hostess to the Scrap Book Club and additional guests. Beautiful lavender salt cedar and pot plants were used in the decorations which formed an artistic background for the gay party of “42” players for which six tables were placed. The tally cards and score pads were in lavender and white, the colors chosen for the decoration. At the conclusion of the games a delicious salad and ice course was served on attractive Japanese trays laid with Maderia and trimmed with periwinkles.

One of the nicest watermelons yet received by The Reporter came last Friday morning with compliments of W.I. Caywood, who just wanted to show us that his son, Lee, was not the. only member of the Caywood tribe who knows how to grow them big and juicy.

Quick action by volunteer firemen and neighbors was credited with saving the house and belongings of a Praesel Addition family in a Tuesday evening house fire. Firefighters were called to the Kenneth Waters home at 6:30 p.m. according to assistant chief Joe Werlinger, and arrived to find flames shooting from the north end of the structure’s roof. “Our firemen and the neighbors teamed up to save that house and the family’s possessions.” Werlinger said, “ While we were containing the fire the neighbors were carrying things out of the house. They only lost one piece of furniture.”

Rockdale’s downtown group wants to mobilize volunteers to clean up, and spruce up—what else?— downtown Rockdale.

The Municipal Development District (MDD) endorsed the idea in its meeting last Wednesday and recommended $4,296 for materials and equipment and up to another $5,104 for a painting project. Toby Johnson, RDA president, appeared before the MDD board to discuss the project. She said “Friends of Downtown” volunteers will be organized to make the area more attractive. That includes working to keep parking spaces and sidewalks clean by vacuuming and power washing. Another goal is also to paint exterior of six buildings per year, with RDA’s help.
