100 YEARS AGO…
The Commissioners Courts of Milam and Robertson counties in joint session at Cameron, Tuesday of this week, opened bids and awarded contract for the construction of the Brazos bridge on the Reagan Highway below Gause. the Wisconsin Bridge & Iron Company of North Milwaukee, got the contract, their bid being the lowest at $162,291. The contract calls for the completion of the bridge in 300 working days. the bridge is to be of the latest design with concrete flooring and built according to Federal Bureau plans.
Mrs. E.T. Kemp and Miss Irma Dunnington entertained seven tables if “42” players last Thursday afternoon at the former’s home on East Cameron, in compliment to Mrs. Frank. H. Bethea, who recently arrived from Long Beach, California, to spend the winter with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kemp. The reception rooms were attractively decorated in ferns and bright cut f lowers. the punch table was arranged in the hall, where the sparkling punch bowl was embedded in garlands of fern and the beautiful coral of the cardena de amour vine; here, Miss Florence Louise Dunnington served a delicious punch cup to the arriving guests. pink and white score cards were passed by petite Josephine Murphree who wore a dainty frock of net. The score cards further carried out the pink and white color scheme. Dainty blocks of white cake iced in pink, and pink and white cream were served.
Word was received in town about ten o’clock last Friday night that the wagon bridge over Brushy Creek was on fire and Messrs. E. B. S chnei der, Wa l ter Urban and Ed Schultz armed with a fire extinguisher which they secured at the New Gin here left in a car to do what they could to save the bridge. When they reached the scene, they soon discovered evidence that the bridge had been set on fire, the ashes of the pile of sticks used as kindling were yet noticeable and the fire had only burned a small hole in the bridge f loor by the time they arrived. The fire was soon put out and the bridge saved. Mr. Hugo Wuensche was the first to notice the fire and by his reporting the matter to friends in town the bridge was saved.
40 YEARS AGO…
Plans are growing by leaps and bounds for the October Rockdale Fair with the announcement that recording star Rex Allen Jr. and Miss Texas Tamara Hext will be headliners, along with a TRA-sanctioned rodeo, a gala parade, arts and crafts show, and many other ac t iv it ie s including the animal stock show and sale for 4-H and FFA youth.
20 YEARS AGO…
Rockdale City Council members and Milam County commissioners, in separate meetings during the past week, okayed n agreement to join forces, along with the City of Cameron, to pursue a new emergency services contract by December 1. Scott & White notified both cities that it would cease ambulance service in the county of Nov. 30. Even though the county contributes money to help fund rural EMS runs, it has never had a formal contract with Scott & White.
10 YEARS AGO…
The capital murder trial of Sherill Small, which was scheduled to proceed on Sept. 29 at 9 a.m., has been postponed to Oct. 27. The delay came as a result of the absence of a key witness who was unable to appear for medical reasons.
