There will be a School Carnival at the Tracy School House on Friday night given by the pupils of the school for the benefit of the school. Everybody invited.

Coach Magee’s Rockdale High School Tigers literally scratched and clawed their way to a 21 to 0 victory over the fast Calvert High School eleven on the Calvert grid last Friday afternoon in what has been called one of the most spirited football games ever seen in the district. Although outweighed, man for man, Rockdale outplayed and outclassed the Calvert lads in every department of the game.

Delightful indeed, was the luncheon given by Mrs. L.W. Sledge, president of the Thursday Reading Club, to club members on Thursday afternoon of last week. The hospitality of this elegant home is always accepted with pleasure and this occasion was one of rare charm. On being ushered into the dining room places were found by unique place cards of tin, with lettering of blue. This being the tenth anniversary of the Thursday Reading Club, the tin markers together with place favors of pretty tin kitchen accessories provoked many expressions of delightful approval. The luncheon table revealed a lovely centerpiece of blue plumbago and lace fern held in a silver bowl. A three-course menu was faultlessly served, and the ice course featured the club colors of blue and white. As the luncheon progressed conversation took the turn “Reminiscences of Summer Vacations” and many interesting expressions were related.

Friday night, Oct. 31, is the date. The ladies of the Presbyterian Church have arranged to give their attractive Hallowe’en social in the basement of the Presbyterian Church with eats of various kinds and plenty of run and amusements appropriate for the occasion. The public is welcome.

A panel of judges from Amarillo, New Braunfels and Fort Worth may not have heard of Rockdale before Saturday. They have now thanks to that “Pride of Tigerland” Big Blue Band. The occasion was the UIL district marching contest in Waco. Jim Perry, RHS band director, said “the Big Blue Band’s performance Saturday was “one of our very best ever.” The judges agreed and unanimously showered “I” (superior) ratings on the 130-member unit.

20 YEARS AGO… Milam County Health Department officials held a “stakeholders” meeting with representatives of the medical community to plan distribution of the limited supply of flu vaccine, Roddy Holcombe, health department director, said Tuesday. “It was decided that the first vaccine would go to nursing home residents and medical staff,” Holcombe said.

Holy cow! Also, holy steer, hog, lamb and a lot of other animals. The 2014 Rockdale Fair’s two livestock auctions netted a stunning combined $505,396.80 Saturday, shattering records and lifting the Fair’s “other” auction—the 10-year-old commercial heifer show— into almost status with the traditional market show. The market show auction raised $279,893.49, breaking last year’s old record, $252,051, by more than $28,000.
