In spite of the handicap imposed by the postponement of the date first set for Sept. 20, Rockdale’s big annual “Ford Trade Days” were a success. The crowd began arriving early and the stores were all busy. The program of special events presented by the Chamber of Commerce was also under way. All business houses report a good day’s business, with many calls for the special bargains advertised, and a general stimulation of business. The local banks were kept busy all day, and hundreds of checks were cashed on banks from other towns, some at quite a distance away.

Through the N.M. Bullock agency a deal was closed whereby C.H. Sherar sold his “Soda Parlor” to Messrs. Kenton Hairston and Homer Turner, the sale taking effect Nov. 1. Mr. Hairston would actively manage the business and the new firm would put in a complete stock of confectioneries, cold and hot drinks, and expected to conduct a business which will reflect credit upon themselves and the town as well.

The Re p or t e r was requested to announce that owing to work now in progress of installing the new water mains, it would be more or less frequently necessary to cut the water off while connections were being made. Water Superintendent Tom Offield stated that a signal would be given with the old fire bell. Three taps of the bell at intervals of about 10 seconds, repeated every two minutes, would indicate to one and all that the water would be cut off within the next hour.

It was Red Ribbon week at Rockdale Elementary School and third-grade teacher Karen Laughlin and her students were in the swing of things when students and faculty were encouraged to wear sunglasses for “Shade Out Drugs Day.” Remaining themes were “Drugs and I Don’t Mix Day,” mismatched clothes, and “Follow Your Dreams, Don’t Do Drugs Day,” students and faculty encouraged to wear “appropriate” pajamas and robes, according to Principal Gil Peyton.
