J.P. Kevil has sown the brand of good citizenship of which he is built by voluntarily donating to the city all the schist that may be taken from a pit on his farm just north of the city limits. Alderman Brand Lewis has accepted the offer and has for the past week had men and teams bringing in the schist and spreading it where it will do the most good. North Main Street is being surfaced clear out to the city limits and holes are being filled all over town. Mr. Kevil says the city may have the free use of this schist pit for one year. This is a magnanimous offer on his part, as the pit is located right in the middle of his farm and its close proximity to town gives the city a rare chance to get some street repairs at a low price.

The newly organized Lions Club of Rockdale held its first luncheon at the Larrieu Hotel last Thursday noon, Out of a total membership of 24 only three were absent. Mrs. Larrieu served a meal which made everyone present glad he was a Lion. This being the first luncheon of the club, the program was given over mostly to business matters.

The roller skate craze has struck Rockdale with full force and the sidewalks are crowded with children on roller skates, the ages of the “kids” running from five to twenty-five. Mr. C.O. Brown has rented the Phillips & Perry building on Main Street, and workmen are this week installing a new floor/ The building will be utilized for a skating rink. Pedestrians will be glad when the rink is opened, and the sidewalks are once more left free for use by those who have to walk.

Little Miss Doris Simms suffered a broken arm last Saturday while skating on a concrete sidewalk. This is the first accident of the kind since the “roller skate craze” struck town.

The campaign to enlist Rockdale farmers in the growing of cucumbers on a guaranteed market has proceeded to the point where sufficient acreage has been pledged, the Reporter is authorized by Mr. W.E. Gaither to state that all farmers pledging any part of the acreage will receive the seed contracted for not later than March 10, possibly sooner.

Rockdale High School Big Blue Band members earned 18 Division I (Superior) and 10 Division II (Excellent) rankings Saturday at UIL Solo and Ensemble contests at Temple High School. Band leader Jim Perry 10 soloists, three ensembles and the RHS Stage Band qualified to advance to the state UIL Solo-Ensemble Contest in Austin in June. “Those advancing to state earned a Division I in Class 1 music, which is the hardest,” Perry said.

Rockdale’s business community and many individuals came through for the Rockdale ISD and its students over the past two weeks, pledging $353,870—over $100,000 more than the goal— toward a building renovation program. School officials had asked for cash and in-kind pledges of $250,000 to enable Rockdale ISD to qualify for a $2.5 million low-interest federal QZAB loan.

School trustees in Milano have called a $3.825-million bond election May 9 to build a new junior-high. The bond package, which passed on a 6-0 vote by board members Thursday night, also includes new elementary cafeteria and vocational agriculture buildings. A tax increase of “up to 23 cents” is forecast.
