The State Highway Commission on Monday of this week allotted the sum of $175,000 to supplement local funds for the purpose of constructing that portion of State Highway No. 43 which runs through Rockdale Road District No. 10 in Milam County. The allotment of $175,000 ensures that a good hard-surfaced road with 100-foot right of way will be built through the Rockdale Road District. The allotment was made on the basis of a two-year program, $75,000 to be available this year and $100,000 next year. It is thought that the first $75,000 allotment together with local funds provided by bond issue and now in the bank, will complete the grade work and concrete structures, which will probably require the balance of this year, and that the second-year allotment of $100,000 will then put on the surface.
Arrangements have now been perfected for one of the greatest musical events in the history of this area, for a massed band concert at Taylor next Sunday, May 17. The entertainment will be under the auspices of the Taylor Municipal Band and the Retail Merchants Association and will be held in the new City Park. The concert proper will start at 4 p.m. and continue until 6 p.m. Approximately 125 musicians, under the joint direction of Prof. E.A. Peterson of Taylor, and Dr. C.E. Wisecup of Rockdale, will take part in the entertainment. Immediately after the concert the bandsmen and families will enjoy a basket picnic, and each bandsman is urged to bring a well-filled basket and enjoy the afternoon.
Friday afternoon members of The Bridge Club and added guests were charmingly entertained by their popular club member, Mrs. Robert Lee Hale, in her apartment at the Larrieu Hotel. A profusion of golden sunflowers was used for decoration. Mrs. Hale serviced pink and white brick cream, angel food cake and fruit nectar on rose colored trays. Pink and white baskets filled with mints were the favors.
Will Henke, head of the grocery department of the Scarbrough & Hicks Company, had a narrow escape from death or serious injury yesterday when he was caught under an avalanche of sacks of flour and buried completely. Mr. Henke was passing between two high stacks of flour when the crash came. More than 200 sacks of flour had to be moved before he could be liberated, and he was in real danger of smothering to death. It is considered almost miraculous that he came out without any broken bones or other injuries more serious than a “crick” in his neck.

Friday was a red-letter day for Rockdale firemen as the 7,000-square-foot concrete slab for their new fire station was poured at the corner of Wilcox and Bell. E&M Concrete of Cameron poured the 163 yards in just over three hours, according to Joe Werlinger, RVFD assistant chief. Plans call for a two-story building with two bays, enough to accommodate four large trucks. Firemen are in the midst of a $100,000 drive to fund the project.
