100 YEARS AGO… The Reporter was in receipt of information from Basil McGregor, special government agent for cotton in Milam County, to the effect that up to Nov. 1, 1923, there had been ginned in Milam County 54,190 bales of cotton, counting round bales as half bales, as compared with 41,271 bales ginned to the same date last year. This shows and increase of 12,973 bales.

Mrs. Eleanor Phillips enter tained with three tables of bridge with the honorees being her guests of the week, Misses Rosa and Truelove. Miss Merle Lucas was given a handmade handkerchief for high score, and the honorees also received similar prizes. Chrysanthemums were used for decorations, and a fourcourse luncheon was served after the games. The Phillips home was noted for its hospitality, and Miss Eleanor was a gracious and charming hostess on this occasion.

The Rockdale churches were to unite in a Thanksgiving service as usual this year. Rev. Jesse Garrett, pastor of the Baptist church, would deliver the sermon in the Methodist church building on Thanksgiving morning. An “invitation” to the service would be out of order; every Christian should deem it his or her duty to attend.

The suggestion of the State Bureau of Markets, as published on another page of this issue, that a movement be launched encouraging the eating of more turkeys here at home in order to help dispose of the big crop of these birds in Texas, reminds one of the old “buy a bale of hay at 10 cents” movement when cotton went down to almost nothing some years ago. This editor bought a bale, all right, but we’ll be darned if we’re going to agree to stuff ourself full of turkey to the detriment of the pork sausage an sweet potato crop.

Rockdale Sports Association youth league football— just a dream a few months ago—finished off a highly- successful inaugural season with championship and third-place playoff games staged before about 600 cheering fans at Tiger Field. Complete with pro-style equipment and even cheerleaders, RSA’s first season was a success beyond the dreams of its organizers. As one fan put it, “I can’t believe how well these teams were playing after only one season.” And it was evident. The volunteer coaches (everyone involved in youth football was a volunteer) did a remarkable job. Teams were well coordinated on both offense and defense. They just didn’t play like first-year players would be expected to play.

Funeral ser vices for retired Rockdale businessman and former Mayor Linwood Mehaffey were held. Mr. Mehaffey served as mayor from 1956 to 1966. He operated Mehaffey’s Department Store, which opened after World War II duty, until 1976. He also developed two residential additions here, Linwood Acres and Parkview.

Death penalt y murder t r ia l proceedings came to a quick and final end in a busy few hours when 21-year-old Brandon Charles Cotton accepted a life-without-parole sentence in the 2011 murder of 50-year-old Sandra Phillips. Cotton, who immediately began serving his life sentence, also waived his right to an appeal, according to Prosecutor Bill Torrey. The capital murder trial was canceled.
