The employees of the old-reliable firm of Scarbrough & Hicks Company received a surprise Christmas remembrance in the shape of an extra full week’s pay accompanying their regular weekly paycheck. This firm always remembered its employees at Christmas time, but this was probably the most extensive token of appreciation yet given.

The Christmas holiday swill came to a close and the Rockdale Public School were to re-open on Jan. 2. It had first been announced that the school would re-open on Dec. 31, but the Board of Trustees decided to give the students two more days holiday. All students and teachers were to take notice, therefore, that school would re-open Jan. 2.

Dorothea Phillips entertained the Camp Fire Girls with a Christmas tree. The home was lovely with Christmas decorations and the Christmas tree with the many gifts on it was beautiful. The girls exchanged gifts and a number of boys came and practiced with the girls the singing of Christmas carols. Dancing followed after light refreshments of cream and cake had been served. The party was a delightful affair and Miss Phillips proved herself a delightful hostess.

The Reporter desired to commend the Parent-Teacher Association for the part it played in promoting the municipal Christmas tree in Rockdale. Nothing, we thought, had been done in recent years more calculated to properly establish the true Christmas spirit than this municipal tree. The citizenship generally was also to be commended for the very fine spirit of cooperation evidenced. We began to look forward to an even better program of similar character next Christmas.

There were some major changes going on at one of Rockdale’s landmark businesses. Renovation work was well under way at Miller- Starnes Chevrolet-Buick. An $800,000 overall renovation was changing the face of a building which had been a familiar sight at the corner of Cameron and Wilcox (US 79 and FM 487) for over a half-century. As a result of the renovation, the dealership’s front entrance was closed and a temporary entrance was opened on the Wilcox side.
