The work of making the soil map of Milam County is going on steadily, and considerable progress has been made during the past month since dry weather conditions have prevailed. This work has now been carried on about three months in the county, a party consisting of two men being constantly engaged in making the map. It is the purpose to keep at this work until a soil map of all of the county is made, and it is expected that the field work will require about one year. When the map is completed every public road in Milam County will be shown, and many of the private or second-class roads will also be indicated. When the map is completed each type of soil will be shown as a separate and distinct color on the map, and the extent of each particular soil will thus be given. Therefore, any person can take the finished map and be able to locate on it the kind of soil in any part of the county.

The lawn of the Marr’s home was the scene of one of the prettiest parties of the summer season when on last Friday evening Mr. and Mrs. Wynette Marrs entertained the Ye Merrie Wives Club and guests. The attractive rose garden and profusion of brilliant blooming plants made effective setting for the game tables being rose colored covers. Bamboo trays, flower trimmed and laid with Maderia, were used in serving refreshments which consisted of a delicious salad and ice course.

Arson and burglary at Playland Skating Center early Friday morning resulted in approximately $20,000 in damage to the building and the loss of an undetermined amount of money plus a stereo sound system. Volunteer firemen battled the blaze for about three hours. “It was confined to a snack bar and counter,” Joe Werlinger, assistant fire chief, said. Most of that time was spent in getting the smoke out of the building. There’s no doubt that it was arson according to Police Chief Marshall Martin.

In an emotional, and sometimes tearful, session Monday evening, operators of Rockdale’s largest nursing facility told residents, their families and employees it is closing. The announcement didn’t come as a surprise. Rockdale Residence and Rehabilitation Center’s administrator had painted a grim picture of the 120-bed facility’s future one week ago for the city council.
