Local 4-H youth showcased their botanical expertise at two prestigious Plant Identification contests this spring, bringing home impressive awards and recognition from both the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and the MJ Hanna Contests.

On March 16, teams gathered at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for the annual 4-H Plant Identifi cation Contest. The Senior Team made a strong showing, clinching 2nd place overall. Individual accolades included Aaron Ponnaiya, who earned 1st place, and Jason Ponnaiya, who followed closely with 2nd place. Teammates Luke Holcombe and Noah Bradley also contributed to the team’s outstanding performance.

The Junior Team also impressed, placing 5th overall in a competitive field. Notable individual placements included Alaina Unnasch in 9th place, Winston Walzel in 12th, and Levi Goodson in 15th. Additional team members Mackenzie Holcombe, James Holcombe, and Gabe Goodson participated with enthusiasm and skill.

Just weeks later, on March 28, the team returned to the field for the MJ Hanna Plant Identification Contest, continuing their winning streak. Jason Ponnaiya took 1st place overall, while Aaron Ponnaiya secured 3rd place overall—a finish that also earned him a $1,000 scholarship.

Participants in the MJ Hanna Contest included returning competitors Noah Bradley, Luke Holcombe, Alaina Unnasch, Winston Walzel, Mackenzie Holcombe, and James Holcombe, demonstrating the depth of talent and dedication among the 4-H youth.
