Milam County Child Protective Services Board is requesting help to sponsor a child for Christmas. The number of abused and neglected children in state conservatorship (Foster Care and Kinship Care) has increased once again.
“We try to locate sponsors for each child who will be willing to spend approximately $150 or more to provide gifts for the Christmas holidays. We provided, with your help, gifts for 192 children last year. If you are interested in sponsoring, you will be given a child’s first name, age, and a wish list that has been completed by the foster parent or caseworker. You may do the shopping, or we can do the shopping for you,” said Rachel Owens, CPS Board treasurer.
All of the children have suffered emotional abuse. Many have suffered physical and sexual abuse. “All have been rejected by the very people who should have protected and loved them. Please help us provide as pleasant a Christmas as possible for our children. If you are not able to sponsor a child, we would appreciate any monetary donation toward the care of our children. All donations go into a fund and are used to provide Christmas for the children in conservatorship and the children taken into conservatorship throughout the year. We have around 4300 youth in Milam County and over 1200 of them have been through the CPS system,” Owens added.
Nov. 5 is the deadline for sponsoring a child.
