Music Week schedule listed for Rockdale
National Music Week annual celebration for 2018 begins Sunday and runs through May 13th. Theme is: “Music: The Universal Language”
Churches are invited to participate by including the National Federation of Music Club’s Federation Hymn. ”To Thee, Our God Creator King” in the worship services both weeks.
Music Week posters will be displayed in the public library windows and will include junior high art work.
On Friday, Matinee Musical Club of Rockdale will host the First Friday Coffee at Lucy Hill Patterson Library in downtown Rockdale. Club members will perform.
At 2 p.m. Sunday, the club will host an afternoon movie musical at the Kay Theatre in Rockdale showing “Mary Poppins”.
Wednesday, May 9, the library Story Time includes music to honor Music Week.
Thursday, May 10, piano students of Dixie Whitmore (members of the Jr. Music Club known as the “Keyboard Melody Makers”) will perform for the residents of the Senior Citizen Center at 11 a.m. and Renaissance Villa at 4 p.m.

Master Naturalists will hear A&M prof May 10
Dr. Alston V. Thoms will speak at the Texas Master Naturalist monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 10 at the Milano Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 710 W Ave D in Milano. His talk is free and open to the public. Come at 6 p.m. for a casual potluck dinner.
Dr. Thoms’ talk, “Native Food-ways in the Brazos Valley: Feeding the Family Before H-E-B Arrived,” reviews regional archaeology and cooking technologies before the Spanish traveled El Camino Real.
Dr. Thoms (BA, West Texas State University; MA Texas Tech University; PhD, Washington State University) began his Texas A&M University academic career in 1990 and is a professor in the Department of Anthropology.
He is also director of the Archaeological-Ecology Laboratory. Among other courses, he teaches Indians of Texas, Prehistory of Texas, Hunter-Gatherer Archeology, and Ancient Food and Cooking Technology. His research focuses on hunter-gatherer lifeways and is published in dozens of journals and archaeological monographs.

2nd-4th Sunday washer tourneys benefit ACS
Washer tournaments benefiting the American Cancer Society will be held each second and fourth Sunday of the month beginning at 5 p.m. at the Apache Pass Ice House.
Tourneys will be held through September.
Registration will start at 4 p.m. and fee is $20 per team, double elimination. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third-place teams.

Reading club accepting scholarship applications
Application forms for the Thursday Reading Club’s Bootsie Peebles Memorial Scholarship are available to high school seniors and adults in the community pursuing medical training and may be picked up at The Rockdale Reporter or high school counselor offices in Rockdale, Thorndale and Milano.

Milam EEA to meet May 7 in Branchville
BRANCHVILLE—Milam County Extension Education Association will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 7 at Branchville Baptist Church.
Branchville EEA will host the meeting.
Activities include a business meeting, craft program, fellowship and lunch.
In partnership with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Milam clubs include New Salem, Branchville and Friendly Progressive EEAs. New members are welcome.
