El Camino Real Trail Assn. local chapter to organize Tuesday

El Camino Real de las Tejas National Historic Trail Association is an advocacy group that seeks to protect the historic integrity of the trail, to educate the public about its significance, and to promote resource development, interpretation and tourism along its path.

To aid that effort, a Milam County chapter will be organized at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11 at the Milano Methodist Church fellowship hall, 410 W. Ave. D in Milano.

Bluegrass group set for yearly fund-raiser

MILANO—The annual fund-raiser sponsored by the Milano Senior Citizens will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Milano Civic Center.

The Family Sowell Pickers will be featured, playing bluegrass and gospel music.

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children and $17.50 for a family package.

Concessions will be available at 6:30 p.m. with a variety of sandwiches and pies priced at $2 each. Drinks and chips will be $1 each.

32nd quilt show set for Kolache Festival

CALDWELL—Creative Memories Quilt Guild of Caldwell members will hold their 32nd annual Quilt Show during Caldwell’s annual Kolache Festival. Admission is free.

Show hours are Friday, Sept. 7, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 8, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Caldwell Civic Center.

Organized by Gayle Whited, the show will feature over 100 quilts from bed size to wall hangings.

Demonstrations will be given on both days by Diane Gilbert on pincushions and by Maggie McGuire on “Quilts of Valor” which covers service members and veterans touched by war with comforting, healing quilts.

Guild members have made items for Country Store craft sale offering fabric pumpkins, aprons, place mats, kitchen scrubbies, microwave baked potato sleeves, bowl cozies, hand warmers and more.

Peachie Burlin, last year’s second-place winner in the large quilts category, quilted this year’s raffle quilt, “Blazing Star,” which measures 89x103 inches.” Tickets, $1 each/6 for $5, can be purchased at the show.

A “Coffee Can Chance” will offer gift certificates to quilt shops, quilting services, an Astros baseball throw, an Aggie quilt, restaurant gift certificates and more.

Alcoa Retirees to meet Sept. 13 in Thorndale

Rockdale Alcoa Retirees will meet Thursday, Sept. 13 in the Thorndale VFW Hall, next door to the Thorndale Fireman’s Hall on FM 486 North, according to Doug Williams, spokesman.

Doors will open at 5 p.m. A business meeting will be at 5:45 and the meal at 6 p.m., he said.

Dessert will be provided by members whose last names begin with A through L.

“There will not be a silent auction held at this meeting,” Williams added.

Minerva Community Center meeting Sept. 25; homecoming October 7

The Minerva Community Center annual meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept.25 in the Center.

“If you are a part of the Minerva community, or have ties to it, please attend,” said Deborah Dean, spokesperson. “In addition to electing a new trustee, we will discuss repairs/maintenance, plans for the annual homecoming, building rental and other new business.”

HOMECOMING—The 58th annual Minerva Homecoming and Community Gathering will be held at noon Sunday, Oct. 7 at the Minerva Community Center, 378 CR 232 Loop.

A brief Minerva-Midway Cemetery meeting will be held.

Sunday washer pitching tourneys benefit ACS

Washer tournaments benefiting the American Cancer Society are held at 5 p.m. each second and fourth Sunday at the Apache Pass Ice House. Tourneys will be held through September. Registration starts at 4 p.m., $20 per team, double elimination. Prizes go to the top three teams.

T-SHIRTS—Orders for gray or black T-shirts benefiting the ACS are being taken. Prices: $15 (short sleeve (district brand) and $20 (long-sleeve port and company performance brand). Sizes are available from small to 6XL.
