Did you notice something that happened on Thursday?
Probably not with all the you-know-what news cropping up.
It was the first day of spring.
Thursday was a pretty special first day of spring. It was the earliest first day of that season since 1896.
There are precise and mathematically beautiful reasons for such an early spring, reasons which The Reporter will spare you since everyone has so many more important things on their minds.
You’re welcome.
Suffice it to say that spring is the moment when the sun “crosses the celestial equator heading north.”
We will spare you that are a few more down-to-explanation too. But here earth things spring is:
• It’s a mockingbird singing its little heart out an hour after it’s gotten dark.
• It’s a mare galloping around a pasture apparently for no other reason than feeling good.
• It’s a rumbling greyblack cloud forming in the northwest, then evaporating to reveal a gorgeous sunset.
• It’s a memory of the first pitch of the baseball, a little sadder this year because of what we’ve lost.
• But spring is also rebirth and a reminder things will get better.
