Amazingly, both the City of Rockdale and Milam County managed to stay in positive territory for the year in the monthly sales tax distributions from the Comptroller’s Office.
But there’s a reason why.
There’s a considerable lag between the period for which sales taxes are collected and the time checks are mailed to governmental entities.
“These allocations are based on sales made in March by businesses that report tax monthly, and sales made in January, February and March by quarterly filers,” Comptroller Glenn Hegar noted.
That’s well before the bigger April downturn.
Hegar said the agency expects next month’s allocations, based on April sales, will show steeper declines.

Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD) is up for the month and year.
The MDD’s May check of $42,131 was up 9.58 percent from the May 2019 total of $38,445.
For the year the MDD is up 6.99 percent, going from $169,708 to $181,574.
