Last Friday (my day off) I drank coffee and prayed with the Blonde at the kitchen table. Then I walked with her at Tiger Field. I took a selfie laying on the 50 (don’t tell Coach Miller), another in front of the goal post. I ran across the field pretending to be 16 again. Took another selfie of my feet where my initials are carved in the concrete (sorry social media friends).
I think I had frozen pizza for lunch, which is rare for me to bring something that unhealthy into the house. I studied a couple of hours for Sunday. I played tennis with a former Tiger player. Later the college junior came into town with my man Gustavo (Brazilian soccer player), we went to The Domain and shopped for a pair of summer sandals for her and someone bought me a cup of coffee at the Nordstrom coffee bar. I had a Perfect 10 day (I’m a cynic so I don’t have very many of those).
By Monday I was at a Negative 10. What’s that about? I’m preaching on the 23rd Psalm this week so I’m reminded of the green pastures, the table and the overflowing cup. Jesus is a great host and He likes a good party, so this is a version of Jesus we should all appreciate.
I’m also reminded of the valleys, the enemies that hang out in those dark valleys and how the Good Shepherd carries a club to make those shadows think twice before they mess with us.
What’s the secret to walking consistently and confidently with God regardless if we are at a pasture party or in death valley? If we knew we would write a book, right?! Oops, I forget. God already did.
The college junior Face-Times her mom a lot. When she is stressed out she says, “When I talk to you I always feel better.” I get that. Jennifer has that same effect on me but that really scales when I talk to God.
God tells us in Philippians 4:6-7, “Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns.
Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.”
You old timers used to sing about this when you sang, “Have a little talk with Jesus, tell Him all about our troubles, Jesus makes it right.”
Can I get an, “Amen!”
He told me to remind you of that.
