In keeping with the 2018 promise of Earth Day as more than one day the annual spring Stash Your Trash day at Fair Park is listed as part of “Earth Month.”
It goes from 8 a.m. to 12-noon and is for Rock-dale residents only.
April 20 and 21 are the big days but there are other observances, including a reduced rate for recycling aluminum cans at Rock-dale Recycling.
STASH IT—It all starts with Stash Your Trash, which is designed to give local residents a helping hand for spring cleanup.
It’s for those who live inside the Rockdale city limits only.
Residence will be verifi ed at the site or city residents may bring a driver’s license and water bill to verify they live within the city limits.
Containers will be at the park for free disposal of miscellaneous household items (old furniture, mattresses, etc.).
“Items may also be placed at the curb throughout the year on your regular pick up day or by scheduling a special pick up with Progressive Waste Solutions,” City Manager Chris Whittaker said.
GUIDELINES—Her are the guidelines for Saturday morning:
• Enter Fair Park’s Main Gate at Mill Street. Look for signs. Exit Gate 5 at Roberts Street.
• Please trim your tree limbs, especially those close to curbs. There is free chipping (for limbs 4 inches or smaller) available at Fair Park. (Must be from truck or trailer).
• No motor oil will be accepted.
• No tires will be accepted.
• Fair Park gates will be locked throughout the weekend.
• Please separate metal from regular trash for easier disposal.
• Stash Your trash is unable to accept batteries and any items which contain refrigerant, hazardous chemicals or paint (in liquid form).
• help getting your trash to the Fair Park, call the Public Works Office at 512-446-2511.
• Free fill dirt will be available at the Wastewater Treatment Plant on a first come-first serve basis. No deliveries. Contact the Public Works office for assistance and staff will scoop dirt into the backs of trucks or trailers.
RECYCLING—This year’s observance has a special emphasis on recycling.
The month-long library exhibit will highlight recycling projects and will include books and literature on the subject.
Persons recycling aluminum cans at Rockdale Iron & Metal Recycling, 1263 US 79, will be reimbursed at an enhanced rate during the week of April 23-27.
The enhanced rate will be 50 cents per pound, up from the current rate of 40.
Steve Shannon of Progressive Waste Solutions will address elementary and intermediate school students twice April 20 on the topic of recycling.
He will be on the elementary campus at 10:20 a.m., to meet with second graders, and at the intermediate school at 2 p.m.
NATURALISTS—El Camino Real chapter of Master Naturalists will offer information and free take-home items from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at The Community Room, 109 North Main.
Information will be featured on bee, bat, bird and butterfly pollinators, trees, water conservation, recycling and more.
There will be craft activities and face painting for children and author Sean Wall will discuss his book on edible plants.
Also that day, just down the street, Rockdale Girl Scout Troops 9603 and 9603 will clean up the Old City Cemetery, and its adjacent cemeteries
THE BIG DAY—The actual Earth Day observance is Friday, April 20, which begins with a breakfast and send-off in the RHS gym.
Breakfast for volunteers provided by the Emmaus Project, is at 8:30 a.m., followed by a send-off at 9.
Student organizations, and other volunteer teams, will tackle a number of projects around town from 9 a.m. to 12-noon, including litter pickup, planting and general refurbishing.
