This week’s lesson is on buying products 100% or All Natural (Eggs), Vitamin Enhanced (Hens), Made with Organic, Organic, 100% Organic, USDA Certified Organic, USDA Organic (Eggs), Omega-3 Enriched (Hens), No Antibiotics (Hens), No Added Hormones (Eggs), Free-Range (Hens), and Cage-Free (Hens). What does it mean?

• 100% or All Natural (Eggs): 100% or All-Natural” labeling on egg cartons means that nothing was added to the eggs like coloring or flavoring.

• Vitamin Enhanced (Hens): This means that hens are given a special diet that helps them produce eggs with a higher vitamin content, such as Vitamin E.

• Made with Organic: This means a product contains at least 70% organic ingredients, excluding salt and water.

• Organic: This means the product contains a minimum of 95% organic ingredients, excluding salt and water. • 100% Organic: This

• 100% Organic: This simply means that the product contains 100% organic ingredients, excluding salt and water.

• USDA Certified Organic: This means that all products are grown and processed using strict guidelines, and there are no genetically modified organisms included.

• USDA Organic (Eggs): This means that the hens who produced those eggs, have free range houses and access to outdoor spaces; they are also fed an organic diet.

• Omega-3 Enriched (Hens): Do you need to include more fatty acids into your diet? You can do that by buying eggs labeled with “Omega-3 Enriched”. This means that the hens who produced those eggs are fed a diet that includes flaxseed, algae or fish oils to increase the Omega-3 fatty acid content of the eggs.

• No Antibiotics (Hens): This means that the hens that produced these eggs were raised without any type of antibiotics.

• No Added Hormones (Eggs): If you are worried about added hormones being included in your eggs, no eggs contain added hormones. Added hormones are not allowed in hog or poultry production. Although, there are egg cartoons that contain a label of “No added Hormones”, but this is just for marketing purposes. If you see this label, it must be followed by the statement “Federal regulations prohibit the use of hormones.”

• Free-Range (Hens): Ever wonder what the term “Free-range” means on egg cartons? This means that the hens who produced those eggs are raised cage free with continuous access to the outdoors during their laying cycle.

• Cage-Free (Hens): Sometimes the term “Cagefree” can be confusing. “Cage-free” means that hens are raised in an enclosed structure with unlimited access to food and water. This does not mean that the hens have access to the outdoors.
