CAMERON—The largest cash seizure in Milam County history has resulted in donations to 10 volunteer fire departments and the Milam County Child Welfare Board.

A total of $831,000 in cash was seized March 26 in a traffic stop.

Only a misdemeanor charge was filed but a subsequent civil forfeiture suit determined $640,315.92 was “contraband” and forfeited to the county.

The remaining money was determined to be “not contraband.”

Prosecutor Bill Torrey presented a proposal to donate the following from the DA Office Forfeiture Fund:

$2,500 each—Rock-dale, Cameron, Milano and Thorndale Volunteer Departments.

$1,500 each—Buckholts, Burlington, Minerva, Gause, Davilla and Black Jack Volunteer Departments.

Torrey also presented a proposal to donate $5,000 to the Milam County Child Welfare Board.

Both proposals were approved Monday by commissioners.

According to the prosecutor’s office, all the agencies listed above are expected to receive their money by the end of June.
