Jubilee Days BBQ cookoff schedule

The categories and turn-in times for the barbecue cookoff at Jubilee Days on May 5-6 have been released by the Rockdale Fair Association. On Friday, May 5, turn-in times for salsa will be 5:55 to 6:05 p.m. and margarita entries will be 6:55 to 7:05 p.m. Seafood turn-in time is 7:55 to 8:05 p.m.

Milano school board race

The Milano School Board race has heated up and there are five people running for two spots on the ballot. The contestants are Neile Briden, Carlos R. Campos, Gary Steinbecker, Blake Debault and Odes Foster Jr. Voters will be instructed on the ballot to vote for none, one or two of the candidates.

Board sees plans for former hospital; Whitsel returns

At the Rockdale Independent School District’s April meeting representatives from Corgan Architecture Firm presented concept design plans for the college and career building planned for the former Richards Memorial Hospital building.

ROCKDALE EARTH DAY

MARC consumers, employees and board members, all looking spiffy in their Rockdale Earth Day 2023 t-shirts, did an Earth Day project planting new plants in their front flower beds on Friday. Many beautification projects took place that day. 

QUICK LOOK

Starting May 8, the Rockdale Christian Services food pantry is making a major change to its open days. The pantry will be open every Monday from 10 a.m. until noon except for federal holidays. This will be the only day the pantry will be open each week.

Railroad museum looking for volunteers to rebuild Old Town Cameron

The Milam County Railroad Museum is inviting kids 13 years of age or older, which includes kid-like adults, who would like to be a part of reassembling Old Town Cameron. Meetings will be held at the new museum three Saturdays in May.

ORGANIZATIONS

The Rockdale Homecoming Association annual citywide homecoming will be Sunday, June 11 at the Patterson Civic Center. Rockdale High School Class of 1973 will be the honored class of 50 years. The Honored Business for 2023 is McVoy Grocery & Feed Store.

Monday started out as a dreary one. Maybe the sun will shine later in the day and, then again, it could be the same all day or week. A good day for allergies. It is hard to believe how fast these months are moving along. I’m sure the children whose families are planning a trip are getting excited.
