Iola Avrett, 96, of Rockdale died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale with burial following at Oak Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time Thursday. Mrs. Avrett was born Feb. 11, 1921, in Rockdale to Sylas C. and Ruby May (Henry) Christian. She married Alexander Howard Avrett on Jan. 12, 1941, in Rockdale. Mrs. Avrett worked for a steel company in Philadelphia during World War II, as a secretary for the State of Texas in Austin, then worked as a cashier with Piggly Wiggly for over 20 years. She was a member of First Christian Church in Rockdale, where she played the organ for many years. Mrs. Avrett enjoyed knitting, spending time and playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, cooking and preparing Sunday dinners. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alexander Howard Avrett; a granddaughter, Natalie Avrett; a daughter-in-law, Nina Fay Avrett; her parents, Sylas and Ruby May Christian; and two brothers, Vesper Sylas Christian and Charles Blakely Christian. Survivors are a son, Darwin Avrett of Milano; a grandson, Cody Avrett and wife Kaycee of Rockdale; and her great-grandchildren, Tyler Avrett, Weston Avrett and Brody Avrett.
