Service for Marilyn “Nena” “Mama” Hicks, 82, of Rockdale were held Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. Burial followed at I.O.O.F. Cemetery with Gary Jackson officiating.
Mrs. Hicks died Saturday, April 21, at Scott & White Hospital in Temple.
She was born Dec. 20, 1935, in San Diego, California, to William Leslie Smith and Billie Jo Smith. Because of her father’s career in the U.S. Navy, Marilyn lived all over the United States.
On Oct. 18, 1952, she married Cecil Hicks in San Diego, California. They moved from Port Lavaca to Rockdale in 1967.
Mrs. Hicks was a member of Murray Street Church of Christ and was a lady Bible class teacher for many years. She was a member and past-president of Rockdale Home Demonstration Club and the New Salem Club, was Rockdale Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year and a lifetime supporter of Rockdale Ag Boosters.
The Hicks were grand marshals of the Rockdale Fair and were both very active in Fair activities.
Mrs. Hicks was a seamstress and enjoyed crafts.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Hicks on March 23, 2014; a son, Weslie “Pevine” Hicks on July 25, 2012; a daughter, Susan Marie Hicks on June 14, 2017; a sister, Janice Elidge; and her parents.
Survivors are a son, Leslie Hicks and wife Kay of Rockdale; four grandchildren, Amanda Soori and husband Michael, Shatona Bingham and husband Bobby, Roxanna Hicks and fiancée Clark Center, Tashena Butler and husband Will; six great-grandchildren, Christian Montelongo, Erin Hicks, Wylie Butler, Wacey Butler, Braxton Bingham, Sage Lorilie Soori; a daughter-in-law, Linda Hicks of Rockdale; and a brother, William Joe Smith and wife Kathy of Copperas Cove; also, a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers were Amanda Soori, Shatona Bingham, Roxanna Hicks, Tashena Butler. Bobby Bingham, Will Butler and Michael Soori.
