Charles William McDavid, 72, of Rockdale went to be with our Lord on Saturday, May 31, 2025.
A graveside service Mr. McDavid will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 20, at Knobbs Cemetery in Lee County, with Bro. David Atwood officiating.
Charlie was born in Elgin on Aug. 4, 1952.
He graduated from Sidney Lanier High school in Austin, class of 1970. He loved music and played the violin, making All-State Orchestra three of his four years at Lanier and was a member of the University of Texas String Program.
Following high school, Charlie served in the U.S. Army with the Military Police.
After the military, he played backup for several Austin area bands on both guitar and violin. This career was cut short by an injury impacting his ability to professionally play string instruments.
His love of music directed him to a new career as a luthier and he continued his studies becoming one of the few master luthiers in Texas, working with Austin ISD and UT Austin.
Charlie opened Austin Violins and offered his master luthier services to Central Texas, specializing in string instrument repair, which he continued his trade until his health worsened.
He always found time for his other passion, fishing. He would spend many days and nights with a line in the water and a guitar in his hand.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Benny D and Elsie E. (Turner) McDavid, and a brother, Randall D. McDavid.
He is survived by siblings Pat McDavid (Wanda), Ron McDavid (Barbara) and Rebecca Yawn (Mike) and many nephews and nieces.
The family would like to thank the staff at Rockdale Nursing Home for their many years of great care for Charlie and to the nurses and staff of Comfort Care at Baylor Scott & White Temple.
