Mildred “Millie” Amy Thornton Morris, 87, of Morgan’s Point Resort, previously of Rockdale, died suddenly and unexpectedly on Friday, March 31, 2018.
Funeral services are set for 3 p.m. Saturday, April 14, 2018, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale with Pastor Richard Leggett of First United Methodist Church in Bastrop officiating.
Visitation will be on Saturday, prior to services, starting at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Morris was born April 25, 1930, to John J. and Carrie Amy (Wooley) Thornton in Lott.
She was raised in Lexington and graduated from Lexington High School. She attended business school in Austin, at Blinn College and at Sam Houston State University, graduating with a bachelor of business administration and teaching certificate in 1952.
Mrs. Morris served as secretary of the Beta Gamma Sigma Honors Fraternity while at Sam Houston.
The death of her father in the summer of 1952 changed her plans to teach, and with the older siblings married and with families of their own, and her younger sister in college, she returned to Lexington to live with her mother.
Mrs. Morris accepted a position at Alcoa, working in engineering during the construction of the Rockdale plant.
She married Fred L. Morris Jr.of Lexington on Dec. 13, 1953.
When they opened Morris Pharmacy in 1963, she returned to Alcoa, and her mother moved to Rockdale to care for the children and home.
When their business was more established, Mrs. Morris left Alcoa and joined Fred at the store. She served as accountant, purchaser and manager of the non-pharmacy portion of the business.
She enjoyed bridge club, holidays, church functions, whenever a dessert was needed, she provided apple pie.
In addition to Lexington and Rockdale, Mrs. Morris resided in Temple, Southern California, and most recently at Morgan’s Point Resort with her son and down the street from her daughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred L. Morris Jr., in 2016; an infant son in 1957; three brothers, Norman Thornton of Temple, John Thornton of Lexington, Robert Thornton of Houston; and two sisters, Ruby Alice Morgan of Lewisville, Dora Durham of Denver, Colorado.
Survivors are a daughter, Amy Louise Cowell and husband Jimmy Reeves of Morgan’s Point Resort; a son, Fred Lee Morris III and wife Aimee of Morgan’s Point Resort; two grandsons, Travis Ryan Cowell of Gainesville, Virginia, Mason Andrew Cowell of College Station; two granddaughters, Dr. Shelby Evelyn Morris and Rachel Ivy Morris, both of Houston; three nieces, Jean Lawson of Georgia, Norma Bray and husband Jim of Alvin, Carrie Durham and husband Jeff Howard of Denver, Colorado; and two nephews, John and George Morgan.
