W.E. “Gene” Northcott, 92 of Thorndale died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2020, at Renaissance Villa in Rockdale.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 11, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. Burial followed at Locklin Cemetery in San Gabriel.

Mr. Northcott was born Feb. 25, 1927, in Thrall to William and Pernie Austin (Townsend) Northcott.

He began his education in the San Gabriel school and graduated from Thorn-dale High School.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

On March 25, 1949, he married Betty Rogers at the Methodist Church in Granger.

Mr. Northcott attended Nixon Clay College in Austin, studying business.

He was a manager for Luby’s Cafeteria in a number of cities including Austin, Dallas, Wichita Falls and Denver, Colorado. After leaving Luby’s, they moved home to farm with his brother-in-law, William Rogers, where they have lived the past 52 years.

Mr. Northcott was a member of Meadowbrook Baptist Church in Rockdale, where he had served as deacon. He also served as deacon at San Gabriel Baptist Church.

Mr. Northcott was a former member and vice president of the Thorn-dale School Board and was Thorndale Farmer of the Year in 2004.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Pernie Northcott, and a sister, Barbara Barron in 2013.

Survivors are his wife, Betty Northcott of Thorn-dale; a son, Gary A. Northcott and wife Jenny of Thorndale; a daughter, Diane Hernandez and husband Hector of Thorn-dale; a sister, Doris Carlson of Thrall; grandchildren Chris Northcott and wife Paula, Crystal Wetter and husband Bobby, Kelly Northcott and wife Selena; step-grandchildren Marcus Shelton and wife Traci and Nicholas Shelton; great-grandchildren Kyle, Emily and Shane Northcott, Kobe, Bryant, Billy and Ally Wetter; step-great-grandchildren, Barrett, Tatum and Everett Shelton; and a brother-in-law Ray Barron of Thorndale.

Pallbearers were Chris Northcott, Donald Barron, Kelly Northcott, Bobby Wetter, Kyle Northcott and Billy Carlson.
