The Milano Eagles rushing game showed promise in their 27-0 season opening loss on the road to the Grapeland Sandies Friday night.
The Eagles had 58 rushing yards to Grapeland’s 83 on the ground. Milano’s Kathen Funburg completed five of 14 passes for 48 yards. He also tallied 36 rushing yards.
The team was up against a Sandie offense that was led by quarterback, Rick Frauen-berger. The four-year varsity starter totaled 274 passing yards against the Eagles. He passed for a total of 2,904 yards in 2017.
Senior linebacker Josh Ackley led the Sandies defense with four interceptions. The Sandies were picked to place second in district 12-2A-DII by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine.
MHS vs. Burton
The Eagles will play their home opener against the Burton Panthers on Friday, September 7 at 7:30 p.m.
Both teams lost their season openers and are looking for their first win of the season. Burton lost on the road 54-20 to the Lexington Eagles, who are ranked fifth in class 3A-DII by Texas Football. Last season, the Panthers made it to the class 2A-DII state-semifinals and were stopped by Tenaha, 60-22.
Burton has 10 of their 11 starters returning on both sides of the ball, including senior Dee Winters, an all-around player for the Panthers who caught for 1,371 yards receiving, 956 yards rushing, with 39 touch downs. Winters committed to Texas Christian University in January to become a Horned Frog, and will be in Fort Worth next fall.
Burton was picked to win district 14-2A-DII in preseason polls and ranked fourth in their classification by Texas Football.
