The Rockdale Lady Tigers finished their pre-season strong in their home victory against the Caldwell Lady Hornets on Friday, Aug. 31.
The match was neck and neck but the Lady Tigers inched in the win in the first set, 25-22.
Rockdale proved to be too much for the young Lady Hornets team in the second set winning 25-16. The 4A team returned one senior, but junior Jacey Vykukal and sophomores Elizabeth See and Aaliyah Massingill excelled at the net. They each had 11 kills, kept the Lady Hornets in the game.
The momentum of the match shifted in the third and resulted in a 7-25 loss for the Lady Tigers. Rock-dale came back in the fourth set to defeat Caldwell 25-18 for the game victory.
Rockdale had great defensive play from its back row, according to Coach Jennifer Keen. Senior Reyna Gonzalez had 21 digs. Juniors Payton Miller and Emily Depine were also key players on the ground. Miller had 16 digs, and Depine had 14 digs.
Lyndsey Kolar and Kylie Eubanks crushed it at the net with nine kills each. Kaylee Criswell had eight. Senior Reese Weise tallied 32 assists in Friday’s match.
Austin – Rockdale beat the 9A McCallum Lady Knights in three sets 25-20, 25-21, 25-19 on Tuesday Aug. 28 in Austin.
“You could tell they wanted this win,” Keen said. “Coverage, defense, offense, everything looked great.”
Keen said that the passing from Miller and Gonzales allowed for Weise to get the ball to Criswell for the attacks. She pounded 18 to the ground. Weise had 34 assists along with 9 digs. Gonzales had 13 digs, and Eubanks had 11 digs along with nine kills.
The Lady Tigers open district play on Friday, Sept. 7, against the Franklin Lady Lions at 4 p.m. in the RHS gym.
Milano – Milano won their last pre-district game in a tiebreaker against the Brazos Christian Lady Eagles in Bryan 21-25, 25-20, 25-22, 22-25, 15-7 on Tuesday, Aug. 28.
The Milano Lady Eagles were lead by the Robertson sisters at the net, senior Sterling had 15 kills along with Sterling had 15 kills along with 11 digs, and freshman McKenna had 10 kills. Senior Laynie Bastow played a key role in their victory with 21 assists along with 10 digs.
Milano will play their second district game on Saturday, Sept. 8, against the Buckholts Lady Badgers at 1p.m. in Buckholts.
Thorndale – The Thorn-dale Lady Bulldogs finished their pre-district schedule with a loss to the Lexington Lady Eagles on Friday, Aug. 31, at the Main Gym in Lexington.
The Lady Bulldogs won a close first set, 27-25, starting the game up 1-0 on the Lady Eagles. But the Lady Eagles pulled away, winning the next three sets against the Lady Bulldogs, 17-25, 15-25, 19-25.
Junior Landri Leschber led the Lady Bulldogs at the net with 17 kills along with Senior Maddie Smith, who had 11 kills and 10 digs. Senior Landry Laywell was also impactful with 14 assists and senior Hannah Laurence helped the Lady Bulldogs tremendously with her 10 blocks.
The Lady Bulldogs won earlier in the week in three sets 25-9, 25-10, 25-13 against the Manor New Tech Lady Titans in Thorn-dale on Tuesday, Aug. 28.
Thorndale had key play at the net from Leschber with 15 kills, and Smith with 6 kills. Laywell had 14 assists in their non-district victory.
Thorndale will play their next game against district rival Thrall. The Lady Bulldogs take on the Lady Tigers Saturday, Sept. 8, in Thorndale at 1 p.m.
