RHS Girls’ Basketball

The Rockdale Lady Tigers basketball team played the first game of the 2018-19 season under new head coach Meredith Caffey on Tuesday night against the Giddings Lady Buffaloes.

The game was played after press time.

“I’m excited with this group,” said Caffey. “We’ve had very productive practices especially considering the implementation of systems and practice styles that are new to this group of girls.”

The 2017 Rockdale squad started off the season strong going 16-1, but was plagued by injuries to leading scorer Frances King, and center Anna Harmon. The Lady Tigers finished 6-8 going fifth in district 20-3A. King has graduated and is continuing her basketball career at Midwestern State University, but multiple key players are returning to the team. Harmon is back, along with Kaylee Criswell and Andrea Salazar.

This year, Rockdale has also moved to district 19-3A, but are joined by a lot of their old friends. Third place Jarrell didn’t join them, moving westward to district 25-3A, and neither did Hearne, which moved down to class 2A. The Lady Tigers gained Troy, which finished fourth last season in district 19-3A, and McGregor, which didn’t make the playoffs in the same district.

“My goal during these pre-district games is to see great effort and passion from my players,” Caffey said. “The rest of the coaches and I want to see daily improvement and good execution of the stuff we’ve been working on in these early practices.”

The Lady Tigers will play their second game of the preseason against the St. Dominic Savio
