The Thorndale High School football team made the most of their season opener bye week by choosing their starters and preparing for their matchup against Bremond Tigers scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Sept. 7.

The Bulldogs did well and improved a lot in their scrimmages with the Center-ville Tigers and the Granger Lions, according to Coach Scott Hawkins.

Sophomore Cayden Nicholson will be running the huddle as starting quarterback for the Bulldogs, Hawkins said.

The Bulldogs Slot-T offense, featuring a talented backfield that includes senior running back Luke Leschber, who rushed for 1,820 yards and 26 tackles in the 2018 season, will go up against the Bremond Tigers running game.

Bremond is coming off a 10-2 record and a third-round exit from the playoffs last season. The team was undefeated as state champions from 2014-2016.

Despite coming up short of a fourth championship and losing 15 players to graduation, the Tigers were picked to go first in district 13-2A-DII and eighth in the class 2A-DII state pre-season rankings in Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine.

Bremond will be led by junior J.T. Anthony, in his first year as Bremond’s quarterback. Anthony will hand the ball off to junior running back Dalton Wilganowski and senior running back Keke Keke Paul. Wilganowski ran for 711 yards and scored eight touchdowns last season and Paul ran for 201 yards and a touchdown in their 2017 campaign also.

Wilganowski was also picked by TF to be the Defensive MVP in district 13-2A DII.

District play begins for the Bulldogs on Friday, Sept. 28 at 7:30 against the Rosebud-Lott Cougars at Cougar Stadium in Rosebud.
