COVID-19 cases still going up

Sunday, Milam County reported 17 new PCR cases and 15 discharged PCR cases for a net increase of two.  There was one new probable case and five discharged probable cases for a net decrease of four.  There are 153 confirmed active cases in the county.

No deaths were reported Sunday so with the death reported Aug. 13, the county death toll remains at 54.

"I fear this is not the last. Please be mindful that 80% of the new cases we report are due to the Delta variant, which is so much more transmissible than the other variants. It seems to be more transmissible with younger people as well," Milam County Judge Steve Young said in reporting the fifty-fourth county death from the disease. "Remember that over 99% of those admitted to a hospital with COVID-19 have not been vaccinated. So getting vaccinated is the way to prevent getting ill, losing work, infecting others, going to a hospital or worse. Please get vaccinated.

Currently, 16 Milam County residents are hospitalized and five are on ventilators. Statewide hospitalizations have increased 400% in the past month.  In addition, the Texas Tribune reports that hospital officials say upwards of 95% of COVID-19 patients are unvaccinated, and they will soon be overwhelmed. Dozens of hospitals are out of ICU beds as they struggle with historically low staffing levels and children’s hospitals are also under siege from RSV. Abbott said he will deploy 2,500 more medical workers to help. Cases are also skyrocketing at nursing homes, the judge said in a news release.
