New murals

Mural artist, Sam Welty, has completed his murals around town. About 40 people came to Wolfe Park for a meet and greet with Welty to view Rockdale Earth Day’s signature mural, El Camino Real de los Tejas.

City hears from VFD, AMR about ambulance issue

At Monday night’s city council meeting RVFD Chief Herbie Vaughan and several volunteer firefighters were invited to speak on the ambulance situation. Vaughan said it has gotten better but still needs work.

Fatal wreck on US 77 Sunday

Texas DPS Troopers responded to a report of a major crash between two vehicles on Sunday at 8:35 p.m. A 2005 Dodge Ram pickup operated by Lena Jean Jackson, 51, Rockdale, was traveling southbound on US 77.

County tax rate to remain

County Commissioners approved the proposed 2022 budget of $22,871,036 at Monday’s commissioners court and it may not raise taxes next year. However, depending on your valuation, property owners could still pay more than last year.

Historical grant applications available

Due to a donation from the Hotel Occupancy Tax funds by the city of Rockdale to the Milam County Historical Commission’s Preservation Grant Fund, a Rockdale Preservation Grant is now available for historic preservation.

Vietnam replica in Georgetown for event

The fifth annual Field of Honor will include the “Cost of Freedom” American Veteran Traveling Tribute. The display includes the 80 percent replica of the Vietnam Wall and 72 additional panels that pay tribute to veterans of all other wars. The event will be held Nov.

Car seat inspections slated for Monday

Free car seat inspections are being offered on Monday, Sept 20 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Ben Milam Elementary School, 110 East 21st Street in Cameron. Bring your child and you’ll need to know their height and weight.

Deadlines ahead for Rockdale Fair pageants

Deadlines for the two 2021 Rockdale Fair pageants are coming up quickly. Entries for the Miss Rockdale Fair Queen Pageant is 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept 19. An entry blank can be found on page 4A. Wednesday, Sept. 22, is the final day to enter the Fair’s Children’s Pageant.
