City decides not to enforce ordinance on political signs

The city of Rockdale sent letters to five property owners telling them they were in violation of a city zoning ordinance concerning political signs. The signs in question date back to the Nov. 3 election and should have been removed in November of last year in accordance with the city ordinance.

Annual Rockdale homecoming is Sunday

The annual Rockdale Homecoming is June 13 in Patterson Civic Center. This year’s event will get started at 9 a.m., with coffee and donuts. The Jones family, the owners of Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home, will be spotlighted at this year’s homecoming.

Milam creates vaccine incentive program

In an effort to increase herd immunity to COVID-19 virus, the Milam County Commissioners voted Monday at a special meeting to create an incentive program to get the youth of Milam County fully vaccinated.

A grand splash

Tyler Larkin gets splashed Friday at the grand opening of the Splash Pad at Sumuel Park in Rockdale as his mother Michelle Larkin watches. Tyler and other area children enjoyed getting wet during a ceremony to open the park.

Juneteenth parade downtown; celebration at Moultry Park

Even though June 19 is not an “official” holiday, it is going to feel like one when that date rolls around and the annual Rockdale Juneteenth celebration comes to town. The parade will start at 4 p.m. on June 19. Participants will line up beginning at the corner of Burleson and Cameron.

Museum tracks train history

Editor’s note: Trains were vital to the creation of the United States of America. Milam County has two museums devoted to train history with one in Cameron and the other in Rockdale.

Old Thrasher place going up for bids

The county is putting the old Thrasher place on the auction block in an effort to recoup at least part of the $252,828.79 it spent cleaning up what was legally defined a “junkyard” and referred to as an “eyesore” by many. The auction will be at the Milam County Courthouse at 10 a.m. on Aug.

Truck, tractor pull coming to Fair Park

The Rockdale Fair Association will hold the Texas Truck and Tractor Pull at the rodeo arena at Fair Park on June 11-12. Friday night the pull will begin at 7 p.m. with dancing under the stars from 8 to 12 p.m., with music provided by The Other Band.

Churches, city plan citywide swim evening

Local churches in partnership with the city of Rockdale are sponsoring an evening of fun Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the pool in Veterans Park. “This is a great way for families to start the summer,” said Raymon Puente, spokesman for the event that is open to all who wish to come.
