AUSTIN—A Rockdale barbecue restaurant is in the “final four” of a Texas Monthly readers poll to determine the state’s best. It’s impressive enough that Brett’s Backyard Barbecue is in the semifinal balloting.

City looking for seniors in water-bill pay effort A June 20 meeting to inform Rockdale senior citizens some may be eligible to have their May and June water bills paid by an area agency did not draw the hoped-for crowd, according to City Manager Chris Whittaker.

VFD DONATIONS

VFD DONATIONS—Valero Pipeline Company recently presented a total of $75,000 to Milam County’s volunteer fire departments. Gause, Milano, Rockdale, Thorndale, Minerva, and Buckholts each received $10,000 and Cameron was awarded $15,000.

Industrial hemp may be in Milam future

JUDGE’S COMMENTS Hemp may become a big cash crop in Milam County. Hemp was legalized by the Texas Legislature in the 2019 session and the governor recently signed the bill into law. Thus, effective Jan. 1, 2020, hemp can legally be grown in Texas, with economic potential. As of Jan.

Awards highlighted the Rockdale Rotary Club’s annual fun night and installation banquet Tuesday, June 25 at Rockdale Country Club. Rotarian of the Year award went to Michelle Morgan, club secretary who also serves as Rotary International assistant district governor.
