Nicolas “Nico” Gonzalez, 91, of Rockdale died Sunday, Aug. 9, 2020, at Winnie L Nursing Home in Cameron.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale with Pastor Elias Morales officiating. Burial will follow at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Rockdale.

Visitation is set for 10 a.m. until service time Thursday.

Mr. Gonzalez was born Sept. 10, 1928, in La Feria, in Cameron County, to Federico and Nieves (Pena) Gonzalez.

On May 7, 1947, he married Aurora “Gwen” Rodriguez. They moved to Rockdale, where they owned and operated Nico’s Mexican Restaurant, the first Mexican food restaurant in Rockdale.

He was a founding and active member of Primera Iglesia Bautista Church and had served as a deacon.

Mr. Gonzalez enjoyed playing golf, working outside and mowing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Federico and Nieves Gonzalez; his wife, Gwen Gonzalez on May 2, 2015; two sons, Louis and Richard Gonzalez; a sister, Maria; and a brother, Fred Jr.

Survivors are two daughters, Delia Rodriguez and husband Jessie of Delano, California, and Ruby Ormsby of Rockdale; six sisters, Hope, Rebecca, Irma, Sylvia, Virginia and Yolanda; two brothers, Santos and Benigno; and eight grandchildren, Marke, Sandy and Steve Rodriquez, Niki Rae, Katie Ann and Jon Roman Gonzales, Jason Ormsby and Billy Gonzalez; also, 21 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jon Roman Gonzales, Marke Rodriguez, Stephen Rodriguez, Jason Ormsby, William “Billy” Gonzalez and Peter Slores.
